Potomac River Residence

McLean, VA

Work on this project included a new 24,500 gsf, three story residence overlooking the Potomac River, a new carriage house, and site planning. Work spanned the programming phase through construction administration.

This award-winning residence and its adjacent buildings incorporate spacious rooms for large scale entertaining, informal family spaces, an enclosed loggia, and a carriage house. Historic elements integrated into the design include groin-vaulted ceilings, parallel curved brick arcades, detailed molding, steel and brass gates and railings, and formal gardens.  Additional finishes include custom high quality brickwork, ironwork, stone and plaster detailing, and wood work.

The brick pattern is reminiscent of those found on historic Virginia homes.  The brickwork includes brick veneer and solid brick load bearing walls. The project included presentations to the State Historic Review Agency for scenic easement. This project was completed in 1999 at an estimated cost of over $10 million.

Ms. Olshesky served as a project architect on the architectural team.  Her early design scheme was selected for development by the client.
